Advancing Student Interests
When issues fall outside the realm of “rights” they are designated “student interests”.
‣ The Evolution of Education: The Union is always prepared to engage in dialogue with educators with the goal of streamlining and improving the educational process (ex. Final Exam Reform).
‣ Student Services: The Union supports and stands to aid and improve any entity that serves students (ex. the Athletic Department)
The ZSRU serves three main purposes:
defending student rights,
advancing student interests,
and
serving the community and its youth.
Defending Student Rights
‣ Civil Rights: Freedom of expression, freedom of religion, right to petition, protection against unreasonable search/seizure, right to due process, and all other rights guaranteed by the US Constitution, state and federal law, and associated case law.
‣ Rules and Regulations: Any provision restricting student behavior must show a reasonable and constitutionally valid justification for existence.
‣ Students’ Right to Respectful and Professional Treatment: The conduct of teachers and administrators should model the respect and courtesy that is expected of their students. As such, disrespectful treatment of students will not be tolerated.
Serving the Community and its Youth
‣The well-being of the community is of profound importance to the ZSRU. The Union is always ready to do its part in making sure Zionsville is always a great place to live
‣The Office of the National Youth Rights Association of Zionsville (NYRA-Z) stands to protect youth rights and advocate student interests in the community. For more information about our affiliation with NYRA, click here

Since the ZSRU maintains itself as an independent organization, the Board members are chosen by the seated Board based on merit, qualification, and leadership potential. This also eliminates the “popularity contests” that often are the case with standard elections and allows future generations of the organization to maintain principles and values of the Founding Board.
The Board currently consists of 7 students of Zionsville Community High School under Chairman Abby Llorico. These members were approved by Founder Steve Ross and his 9 member Board.
The ZSRU is governed by a collection of bylaws, which essentially serves as the constitution and guide to official decisions and circumstances with everyday operations of the Board.
